Vista 27PE

We just picked up our new Vista and put in storage while outfitting it. Came back after 3 days and the left side of the dual stainless (???) Sink has specks of rust all over it. Is this stainless or not? Anyone else had this problem?

Just a thought: Was it winterized? It might be traces of the antifreeze.

Stainless steel’s rust resistance depends on the quality of the metal. Ours hasn’t rusted yet, but am pretty sure that it isn’t the highest quality metal.

Thanks for the reply. I am inclined to agree with you, but rusting before we have even used it is pretty bad. Maybe the new generation of Winnibag owners or executives don't believe in protecting their established reputation?

your right shouldn't rust. Good news it is an easy fix. I am sure Winnebago will replace it.

Try a little stainless polish or some Barkeeper's Friend on the spots. Maybe that will clean 'em up for you.

Agree with SaraW. Bar Keeper's friend cleans with oxalic acid. It is not chlorine based.

Would also offer that products containing chlorine bleach should not be used around stainless. There are many similar ferrous alloys referred to as "stainless". They are alloyed for varying resistive properties depending on end application. Nickel is the primary alloying agent imparting oxidation resistance. Chlorine will leach the nickel, thereby lowering oxidation resistance. Most stainless residential sinks come with specific proscriptions concerning using chlorine based cleansers.

A quick way to tell if the sink is stainless steel is to see if a magnet will stick to the sink. If it does, it is low quality stainless if stainless at all. Stainless has nickel alloy and a magnet won't attract nickel alloy. The higher the nickel alloy, the higher the stainless steel quality. Not talking about the 5 cent nickel currency in your purse or pocket.

Hi-
When I was working for a Chevrolet dealer some years ago, we experienced a condition called "industrial fallout". This was fine particles of iron that landed on horizontal surfaces and created rust rings when they encountered moisture. Just about every car had to be compounded and polished. That being said, look closely at your rust to see if it's just on the surface. If so, it should polish off without further problem.
Another thing to check is to see how much ferrous metal is in your "stainless". Take a good magnet to it and see if it sticks. If it's fairly pure stainless, the magnet wont hold.
Good luck with this.
