How to keep Class A stairs from extending?

2000 Itasca Sunrise 33V. Is there a way to keep the stairs retracted with the door open?

According to the manual:

Quote:
The power switch for the electric entrance step
is located to the left of the main entry door as you
enter the coach.

Stationary Retracted Mode
To keep the step in the retracted position:
• turn the Power Switch to On,
• close the screen door to extend the step,
• then turn the Power Switch to Off.
The step will now stay retracted when the
screen door is open or closed. This position is
normally used where an exterior step is not required
or to avoid damage to the setp, such as
when parked near a high curb or similar object.

Ideas? Could it be that the previous owner replaced something (screen door, step motor) and that changed the equation?

It looks like the functionality changes if the steps get "upgraded" as per NeilV's post.

lgehring-

Try this: Attach a small magnet to the inside of the switch that is attached to the screen door.

Yeah, that sounds like our steps. We may get a chance this weekend to check underneath to confirm. It's a shame, because we want to keep the steps from scraping the ground at the gas station.

Yes, a magnet

I keep the steps retracted with the door open when servicing my batteries which are under the step. All you need is a decent magnet. The switch that activates the steps is usually located on the bottom, inside corner of the screen door. Turn off the auto retract on the step switch so that the steps go in when the door is closed. Open the door, place the magnet next to the switch on the coach, not the screen door. The steps should retract.

Thanks! I'll give that a try this weekend.
