I bought an Itasca Sunstar 32 K that is listed as CB Wire Prep. What does that mean?

bjbkkb,
Having CB wire prep means your unit has a CB antenna and coax cable already installed. The cable is usually on the drivers side tucked up inside and behind the dash.

So I should be able to just by a CB and it is "plug and play"?

Yes - but you might need to also buy and install an antenna if that's not already on the roof.

My unit was supposed to have the CB prep package. It turns out that meant there were wires for power under the dash, and that's all, no antenna wire. In doing some research, I found that you should use the antenna cable that comes with the antenna, and not alter it's length at all. Given this, it makes sense that Winne would not install a cable and no antenna. So, if you have an antenna, you should have a cable -- conversely, no antenna no cable.

Earlier they included the rusty antenna and coax. Now all that is there is a pair of wires, 1 yellow with a butt connector on it and a white. This is what Winnie tells me. I have never been able to find mine! We had a thread on this late last year and the conclusion was that Winnie has a guy whose sole job has been to hide the CB wire and he is VERY good at it. When they included the antenna, it was easier to spot because the coax and power would be in a bag hidden somewhere. Good luck fining it! Steve

That's because the "antenna" is about 3db above a really good dummy load. Matches out really well, but into what I don't know.

Can anyone be more specific about where the CB prewiring can be found? I have looked in the area where it is supposed to be and I haven't been able to find it.

As I mentioned awhile back, good luck if you can find it. It is supposed to be near the steering column but neither I or the dealer could find it. I just found another source for 12v but would rather find the one that is supposed to be installed so please let us know if you discover it.

I found mine about halfway between the steering colum and the side of the coach. I've decided to use the hot wire to power my Pressure-Pro moniter.
I had a CB on my Adventurer and after hearing only truckers gripe about " that darn, slow motorhome",I turned it off and that was the end of that!

On my 2003 Itasca Suncruiser, I located the hot wire AND antenna lead in the plastic trim on the left side of the driver area (about calf high when you are driving).

My 2007 Winn Tour had 'CB prep' listed and I soon learned that this meant ONLY a wire and NO antenna. So my CB sits in the basement compartment waiting for me to get the guts/stupidity to drill through my roof so I can listen to truckers drop the F-bomb non-stop!

I never hooked mine up either. I get enough gestures without them gripping on the CB too.

Mount the antenna in the basement. You may not be able to get 5 miles down the road, but you will get 1 mile down the road. Many years ago, mounted one(magnetic) in the trunk of a car. Worked fine. Now I just use a hand held CB radio with weather station. Works fine for talking to the close by truckers for information. In Connecticut, turned it on, asked where the next truck stop fuel was and immediately was told what exit.

Predesigned antennas have the cable already installed or cut to match the frequency of the antenna. You still have to do a little trimming to reduce the standing wave ratio. If your cable is detachable from the antenna, you can divide 468 by the frequency in Mhz will give you a full wavelength for your cable run. Example: at 27.185 Mhz (Channel 19) the length of one wave is 17.2153.... feet. 1/2 wave of that is, and 1/4 wave is (you do the math). You can use any multiple of the figures you come up with to achieve minimum SWR. Again, some tuning of the "whip" of the antenna may be necessary to get a relatively small SWR signature.

SWR is Standing Wave Ratio and is the amount of reflected power coming back into the radio from a mismatched antenna system. To much can let the smoke escape from the radio. Once smoke escapes you have to send it back to China to get the smoke repacked into the components that smoked!!!

By standing on my head I was finally able to find mine on the far left of the steering column on the floor. Only use is traffic jams and caravans.
