Surge Protection and Warranty

Hello, we're about to buy a new Itasca Meridan 38P. Winnebago is offering a 3 year warranty this summer which is a nice touch, however I am contemplating installing a hard wired surge protection/power monitor system (a Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C to be specific). The installation is very straightforward, but it does entail cutting the 50 amp cord and wiring the unit in. Will this impact or even void the warranty? I am fully capable of doing this myself, but I'd have no qualms hiring an electrician if that would save the warranty.

I can always go to an external, portable system if need be, but a permanent installation is much more attractive to me.

BTW: we plan on full timing in this coach in 18-24 months. This is only the first of many questions coming at y'all

Thanks.

Jp

wanna-travel,

:welcome:

I suggest you get a letter in writing from Winnebago before you or someone else cuts your power cord.

Have you considered negotiating a surge protector installed into the purchase price? Might not cost you any money and get the dealer to install and include in the warranty.

My 2016 Winnebago/Itasca Solei 34T came with a Progressive surge protector. It's a little hidden and upside down in the top corner of the 50amp cord compartment.

Is there any chance the Meridian model also has one?

If not already equipped, have your dealer install the HW50C before delivery. No warranty issues with dealer installed aftermarket equipment.

If you want to do it yourself, there are no warranty issues either but that is your choice.

Piece of cake to install, unless your power cord is on a real. If you properly tighten down all of the screws and ensure that you replace the strain reliefs on the power cord you should be OK.
Its a very good investment so do it or at least have the dealer do it prior to delivery.

I had my dealer install mine. I ordered our 2016 from Winnebago through a dealer with the colors and options we wanted.

As a part of the purchase deal I had the dealership transfer over my year old six volt batteries, install a steering damper, and Road Master trac bar and sway bar. Plus I also ordered the installation of a Progressive Industries surge protector.

The down side is they we waited for 4 mounts while Winnebago built our coach. The fun side is that I contacted Winnebago and was able to track my build through emails.

Safe travels. JD
