Stand alone HD for Dish satellite box

Has anyone installed a stand alone hard drive to their Dish satellite box so they may record programs? Are you happy with it and what brand did you get?
Thanks

Yes here is the one I have, it's almost indestructible, works great after reprogramming from Dish.

Amazon.com: LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 500 GB

I've been using a Western Digital 1TB external hard drive. I also use a Thermaltake BlacX that will take almost any SATA HD, 2.5" or 3.5". Just drop the hard drive in and go.

You can use as many external hard drives as you want (one at a time).

Does it plug into the electric plus a UBS plug? We just bought a Western Digital iT but it has no electric plug.

It's powered by the USB and I can't say as to how long you can record with it. the avg HD movie is about 800mb to 1gig so that would translate to almost 500 HD movies

My husband has talked with Dish and they said we needed to have a power adapter as well as the USB plug. We have a VIP211 and they recommend a Hitachi XC1000 1T which doesn't seem to have good reviews.

Got one on all my receivers. Had one problems once. It was a bad USB cord. Works just like an internal HD. Pause rewind and fast forward through the commercials.

Takes two cords. One USB and one to the power supply.
