Did you try rotating the rotating knob on the dash that dims/brightens the dash/gages lights. If you rotate it all the way, youíll feel it click into a detent, the drivers reading light should come on.

People make mistakes

As mentioned above, don't forget that the wiring harnesses are complex and people make mistakes. I had found a brass connector that was placed in the wrong hole of a plastic socket assembly, that caused my house batteries to not charge while driving. Once found, an easy fix.
The reading light switch, on your dimmer control, will be a separate "on-off" contact, with a connector that is separate from the dimmer portion. Are you able to check for 12v there and verify its connector is in the right place?

Lamp

it is definitely control by the dimmer switch. It took me a long time to figure that out.

Light

You are probably right. The light is probably a courtesy light for the door. I rarely open the driver door, and donít recall if I ever have at night.

Tried the dimmer switch 10 times now. Headlights on/off,
motor on/off, generator on/off, bypassed the switch on the
back of the light. Nothing gives me 12vdc at the light.
Dimmer works to dim the dash lights, but the detent seems
to do nothing.

Just a rethink on the non op lamp. The button switch in the door jamb can be corroded a little from lack of use, snap it in and out to reactivate, give it a try
