I like Xantrex products because the company has been around for years and they are the dominant player in the market. They have the resources to do a good job of R&D and manufacturing. Enough gushing about the company.
The Echo~Charge is a quantum leap over a jumper wire and a fuse (connecting the battery banks together) - to me it looks like an intelligent charge controller which is using the house battery bank as the power source. Read about it
