Couple Questions about Bulbs

Our '99 Chieftain has three night lights close to the floor. The bulbs look like a glass fuse with very low light intensity. Does anyone know the bulb number?

Also under our step is an amber light mounted by the electric step mechanism. What turns this light on. I just discovered it the other day but I have never seen it on. The bulb is fine in the fixture.

my understep light works when the step switch is on and the door is open. when I close the door, light goes off. If my step switch is off, so is the light. Maybe test your bulb for continuity and check the grounding wires and socket, sometimes a little corrosion throws a wrench in the works. The little fuse bulbs should have a number stamped on them somewhere, Ive never seen any personally, my local napa auto parts store has a knowledgeable guy that can track down oddball stuff like that, might give your parts store a try.

corvettec3,
Those lights near the floor in your coach are called "Isle lights". The bulb they use are called "festoon" bulbs. They are almost the same exact bulbs you used to use in old fashioned "dome lights" in many cars. There are two types of these bulbs. The are the ones you see, and have bullet ends or caps and, the others have "Wire loop ends". Those with wire loop ends are commonly found as closet lighting and, because they get rather hot, almost immediately after turned on, they will have clear plastic, heat resistant cage around them in the even you might bump your hand against them while installing or retrieving cloths.

I've recently changed my isle lights with LED festoon bulbs. They are seriously cooler and, draw almost "0" wattage. I did the same in my closets. Those now are brighter, cooler and again, don't draw almost anyting in voltage. Below is a link to the online company I purchase most of my LEDs from for changeout. It's just something to condider for you.

I would like to replace most, if not all the lights in my 2001 Itasca 32V with LED's, but do not know how to tell what LED lights are compatible, can I get a list someplace?

doit2010,
I and many here have done just that. We've replaced 90% + with LEDs. The "list" you're inquiring about is almost non existent for about 99% of the coaches out there. What you have to do is, take a tablet and pencil and go to each and every bulb, in each and every fixture (minus the long florescent ones for now) and right down, where they are, i.e. "bed room, under cabinet or wall fixtures over head board etc." Many of the bulbs will have a 15mm base on them which, is the same size as the older backup light bulbs and stop/turn/tail light bulbs in the older cars/trucks/motorhomes etc.

They, the bulbs, quite possibly will have a number designation on them too. It might say something like "1073" or "1156" or "1141" etc. All those numbers, along with the base size/type, will help you in your search. Take for instance, let's say you have two light fixtures, over the bed, on the wall of your bed room. Each fixture might have two, 1073 bulbs. So, you'll need (4) "BA15-1073, LED replacement bulbs for those two fixtures. Now, you'll need to go to all the fixtures in the coach that you want to do a change out in LED bulbs and write down, all the pertinent information for each fixture and bulb type.

As for where you'll be purchasing your LEDs, there's many resources on line. www.superbrightleds.com is the one I use for about 99.9% of my purchases, ledwholesales.com I think is another one. There are many places on ebay too that sell them. It's up to you to pick your outlet for purchasing them.

As for which LED is compatible for a given situation/fixture/lamp etc. that takes a tad bit of experience with trial and error. We've all done it. www.superbrightleds.com has lots of information on the lumens, brightness, color core temp, aka "KELVIN" temp. The higher the number, the whiter the light. For instance, the average head light bulb, back up light bulb etc. is around 3500K. The HID headlights and much whiter/bluer headlights/bulbs etc. is around 5000K-6000K.

Some folks don't like the whiter lights in their coaches so, they go for what's called a "Warm white" instead of a "cool white" bulb. That's a more yellowish or, natural light. I personally like the whiter/bluer myself, it's a preference thing. So, there's some info on LEDs for you to ponder.

my moho uses festoon lamps in 2 places, the stairwell and hallway.
my local rv dealer ordered 2 for $4.50 each.
after buying those, i found the ge de3022 lamps at freddy myers for about $1 each. they are a little brighter than the original and last at least 10 times longer.
i would like to try a led lamp but they are pricey too. i don't use these lights enough to invest that much.
i haven't needed to replace my yellow step light yet so can't help you there.

Fire Up...Thanks for the info. I found the equivalent of the festoon bulbs in the LED version. The glass in them is a little larger than the original festoon bulbs but there is room in the sockets for them.

corvettec3,
You're certainly welcome Sir. As you will find, maybe already have, there's multiple places to purchase LED replacement bulbs. And, yep, there's a few different "festoon" bulbs too so, when ordering those on line, if the business you're ordering from supplies it, find all the dimension info before doing the final order. Many companies will supply LED bulbs in all kinds of sizes, claiming that they're EXACT replacements but, there's sometimes size differences that might limit the ability for the bulb to fit. Glad you got what you want.

I have yet to figure this business out. It's just like Solar, prices just don't seem to go down as technology improves. I mean, VCRs when they first came out, were seriously expensive, as well as many other electronic items but, as time went on, and technology improved, the prices dropped tremendously. VCRs are now $39.00 but, LED bulbs and Solar are still way up there.
