Cabin heater core

I have a 1996 Winnebago Vectra WKM 34rq. The heater core has gone bad and needs replacing , problem being it looks like it going to be a pain to remove and replace. I was wondering if anybody out there has any experience with this task? If so what is the best way to go about doing this project?

I replaced the heater core on a 2002 Horizon 32 TD by disassembling the passenger side dash. It was not as difficult as it seemed. Your coach is a gasser so not sure how the HVAC system is installed. I would take a look under the hood and see if you can locate the HVAC box, if it seems as if the motorhome was built around it then time to go inside. Take a look at the dash area looking for exposed fasteners. After removing the fasteners start sliding the dash pieces, they probably fit together like a jig saw puzzle - get the right combination and it will practically fall apart. Also go to the Winnebago web site and see if the parts diagrams are available for your coach, they can be invaluable in showing how these things are put together.

Good luck,

Cabin heater core

I failed to mention in my original post that my Vectra in a diesel pusher not a gaser. Also the cap/ front clip does not rotate forward or let down. But thanks for the responses.

Are you a member of the Winnebago club (WIT)?. Maybe they have information regarding this problem.

On my 2000 Horizon the lower front cap had to be removed. Here is an excellent link to the process on a different model than yours.

I saw the procedure that bsamole has linked and was considering it for the heater core replacement on my 2002 Horizon. Before I would do this on the 1996 Vectra I would take a close look at doing the work from inside the coach. The dash will come apart and allow access to the heat/AC duct work and the blower. Once the ducting and blower are out of the way the HVAC plenum will be accessible. The need to lower the front cap is to allow the HVAC plenum cover to removed from the front, once the plenum is dropped down the clips holding the cover in place are easily accessed. Here's a couple pics to show what I saw on my coach. The Vectra may be a bit different, but probably still similar.

Good luck,
