Brakemaster On DP

Currently have my Brakemaster on my gasser, taking ownership of my DP on Thursday, my question is.
Is it necessary to have the brakemaster hooked up on a DP with air brakes while towing a CRV Honda ? Will the air brakes stop the toad ?
Reason for asking is I am in Fl. until March then back to NJ where I have the necessary tools.

If you don't have the installation instructions with you; you should be able to download them from the Brakemaster web site, to check for differences.

The only difference would be that some DP's activate the brake lights, when the engine/exhaust brake is in use and if the toad brakes are triggered by the coach brake lights then overheating of the toad brakes can occur.

- Necessary to drive the combination? ..no.
- Necessary to be legal? ...depends on states involved, weights, etc
- Necessary to stop in shortest distance possible in emergency situation? ..yes

If the brakes are drum and self adjusting properly or disc which don't require any manual adjustment and the system is operating properly, sure the Destination will stop with the toad in some given distance.

In the 80's we had a gasser P30 chassis and towed an Ford Escort wagon all over kingdom com without supplemental braking. I doubt there were such units at that time.

Things are different lawyers are looking for an edge, why provide them one? Should, millions to one chance, an accident occur with bodily injury you may be tenting for the rest of your life. Hell, you may have to live in one! Most all states require supplemental braking for anything over 1500#.

Last fall I forgot to bring my Patriot brake unit and after I had hooked up the toad realized it. I was only going 60 miles distance and knew I could stop in a controlled situation, but what if?? Made the trip, but left lots of space ahead of me.

I'm getting towards the end of my personal journey and don't want to give back what I've worked so many years for. It's just my .02. I hate what if, what if, what if.

IMHO, the DP will stop the CRV just fine. I towed a Chevy Tracker for years behind a gasser with no problems before I got the brake system. It will just take longer to stop. A similar question will come up over whether or not you have the proper license. Can you safely operate your coach w/o the proper license? Sure. Can you do it legally? No. Is it worth the risk in either case? That would be your decision to make.

You will need the brakes in the towed to be legal where ever you go. Some states require them at a certain weight, others because they need to have a way to hold the vehicle on any normal road grade when unhooked from the towing vehicle (that last one is part of the WA laws).
Sure, you can get away with it, (lots of people do) until you find out you could have stopped before you hit that van full of kids!

Don't the toad brake systems incorporate a break away system ?

You won't have that either.
