30a to 50 a adaptor

can someone explain how these adaptors work? Are the rvs that have only 30a all 120v? Second ??. I pluged my 120v 20 a adaptor into house 120v outlet 1t read 120v on both legs. Then i plugged it into the 30a adaptor. It also read 120v on both legs. Then i plugged the 30a adaptor into the 50a rv adaptor. it also read 120v on both legs. Does the 120v 20a to 120v 30 amp adaptor split the same 120v leg? And does the 30a 120v to 50a adaptor do the same? If i am correct, I should be able to plug my 30a to 50a adaptor derectly into a 30a 240v wired box at home and be able to run my ac. I do not want to do this any where else. just a ??? My RV has 50A

The 30A service on your RV (please fill out your signature so we know what RV you have) is 120v with 30 Amp service. A 50A plug is two 120v legs with 50 amps on each leg. So, a 50 Amp is actually 100a service.

So, yes, 50A RV service is "kind of" 240v, but not like your electric dryer. It's two, completely separate, 120v legs.

A 30A plug in a 50A adapter just brings one leg of 120v service into your RV. It's bringing in 50A service but your RV is limited to 30A because of the size of the electric panel. So, 120v/30A is all you have.

If you plug your RV into a 240v service - even - with a 50 to 30 adapter you'll cause all manor of destruction to both your RV and possibly your electrical service.

To answer your final question: NEVER think of a 50A RV as being a 240v device. It's not and you cannot plug your 50A RV into a 240v plug at your home.

If your home has a 4 prong 30 amp 240 VAC Dryer Outlet then NEMA 14-30P to NEMA 14-50R adapters are available to safely adapt that to a 50 Amp RV shore cable. You can also get a NEMA 14-30P to NEMA TT-30R adapter to safely adapt to a 30 AMP RV shore cable. Both are available on Amazon.com and other places.

However, if your home has a 3 prong 30 amp 240 VAC Dryer Outlet then this can't be safely done without having an electrician change the dryer outlet to 4 prong. This can only be done IF the wiring from the breaker box to the dryer outlet has separate Neutral and Ground wires.

Starting in 2000, the 4 prong outlet and the wiring with separate neutral and ground became required. Before that, no. So if your home pre-dates 2000, then the 3 prong to 4 prong dryer outlet conversion may require a new wire run from the breaker box to the dryer outlet.

If wiring from scratch, just do it right and put in a NEMA 14-50R on a 50 amp 240 volt double breaker, or put in a NEMA TT-30R on a single 120 volt breaker.
