Windshield Channel Maintenance
03 Journey DL, I pulled off strip on top of windshield today and there seems to be no major rust. I did notice that the area seems to hold alot of moisture. what can i do to keep this moisture out and prevent future rust problems? Thanks.

I dried out the area under the rubber molding and filled the voids with some polyurethane sealant I picked up in a tube at lowes. It's not a silicon caulk. So I figured if there's no voids for the water to accumulate it should stave off a problem. time will tell and I will be keeping an eye on it .

Since I have had to replace the passenger side glass due to rust-induced breakage, I pulled the rubber and cleaned the void well, let it dry, and put a bead of caulk behind the upper edge of the rubber trim. I am hoping that will keep water and crud from accumulating behind the trim.

I filled the voids with butyl tape. I am going to try applying rust converter to what ever frame I can get it on.

From looking at the channel and the trim, it looks like if I put any sort of caulking in the channel, I would then have a problem getting the trim back in, no?

I put screen spline material in the trim groove so I could remove it after filling the voids with the polyurethane sealant. It kept the groove clear and the installation of the rubber trim easy.

Yesterday I pulled the rubber trim along the top of both windshields and used a high pressure air hose to clean the crap out of the cavity. I then cleaned the fiberglass directly above the molding with lacquer thinner and pushed the rubber trim back in place. Using 1 1/2 Eternabond tape I applied it right across the top overlapping the fiberglass and rubber molding by 3/4". It looks great and will keep any moisture or water from entering behind the rubber molding. If you want to see the end result, just let me know and I will post a couple of pictures. It sure looks better than caulking in my estimation.

Any pictures you could post would be great! I've already replaced the windshields and done the rust repair, but am always open on anything that might improve my odds of not having to do the $3,800 repair a second time. -RT

You did a beautiful job on the window trim with the E-bond tape.
Think I might just have to do that to my 98 winne chieftain.
That's ONLY if the weather will warm up here in SW PA !

Well it wasn't very warm here in Nova Scotia when I did mine yesterday. But it does look pretty decent and much better than caulking would look, at least that is my take on it

Beautiful job. Eternabond crossed my mind for sure. Here is my concern, if I have to take window out someday, will the eternabond be a problem?

I ran across this product yesterday at Walmat
Rust-Oleum Flexible Rubber Coating
I bought a can and plan on coating the area around the rubber channel. I will mask and also use the screen spline as suggested.

That crossed my mind as well but there is a compound available from Eternabond for removing it. I guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it. Right now I have the satisfaction that no more water or moisture can enter the channel at that point and I don't drive in the rain so none can get pushed up under the molding either.

I had to replace drivers side glass and had rust on the frame. Not all the frame had rust in it. power sanded it off and painted it with por 15 then sanded the por 15 with 320 grit so the glass glue would stick to it. Only paid my $250 deductible . it's a 06 journey. When i was up on the ladder i took the marker lites off and guess what? There was no gasket or cauking on the lites .

Marker lights- another great idea for maintenance item. I am going to check all if mine and if necessary reseal with butyl tape and screw in.

I just replaced all my marker light gaskets. They were there but all dried up and shrunken. The lead to the bulb was so short on one that I will have to get to it from the inside to give a bit more slack to get the lens back on.

This should be a sticky because a little maintenance can save a lot of money and prevent the windshield frame from being compromised.
