I have a first time RV owner, sitting next to me, who purchased a 2000 Ultimate Freedom from LD and we were talking about maintenance on the units. I of course told him to be sure and check his roof edge but when I showed him how to inspect it what a surprise. The roof edge is the same fiberglass tucked in the multiuse channel but it has never been caulked with the polyurethane except on the radius of the end caps. So I am posting this question on his behalf has anyone of the Ultimate Freedom owners rigs roof edge been uncaulked? I also told him to call Winnebago but a second opion never hurts. Believe me I am "Intimately" familar with the roof edge on my 2002 Adventurer have spot caulked and this summer will strip and replace the both sides entirely. I am not a fan of tape method.

Don't have any idea why you are not a fan of Eternabond tape. But please do tell the newcomer about doing the one time tape. I think for most of us that have used it we would say it's worth the added one time expense and work of applying it.

Unless the coach has FBP, I would agree that the tape is the ultimate solution (other than Winne improving the design of that seam). I did it by myself, it wasn't difficult and it blends well with the white roof. Even with FBP, I understand Eternabond can be painted.

smrangler,
I am going to get a picture of a cut-away model of the roof section they have at the dealer a few miles from me and post it. I was looking at it the other day and it looks like water would have a hard time getting between the side walls even if it got past the calk. The gutter has a lip on the underside that would take the water to the front or back cap and that may cause a problem. But I feel better with the eternabond covering that seam.

To answer the original question ...I am sure the side roof seals on the Ultimate Freedom would have been sealed with some form of caulk/sealant. My 2003 Ultimate Advantage seams are caulked. I have them checked once or twice a year, and have always had at least minor repair work done to the sealant. Whether someone wants to go the route of Eternabond tape is up to them. Does anyone know how that would affect the 15yr roof warranty???

I am on my second Ultimate and have looked at several others. I have never seen an Ultimate where the roof was not caulked. Something is wrong--either it was a serious factory oversight (unlikely IMHO) or someone removed it for some reason. In either case have a Winnebago dealer replace it ASAP or if it was a recent purchase LD should take care of it--I wonder why LD did not catch it in the PDI?

I ask the warranty question on the roof at the last GNR. What I was told by a Winnebago rep is caulk and Eternabond both serve the same purpose and that's to stop water intrusion into the joints. If the roof fails due to water intrusion, warranty does not cover the repair. The reps example was you can put Scotch tape on the joint if you like, but if the roof fails because they find water intrusion is the cause, the warranty will not cover it. It is the owners responsibility to check and repair the joints as per the manual. Remember, that was a verbal statement and not written in stone by Winnebago.

Winnebago gives a 10 year warranty on the fiberglas roof. This is one big reason why I chose to buy a Winnebago. After reading the warranty I find it very misleading. The main reason for a roof to fail is because of a water leak and thats not covered by the warranty. In my opinion the warranty is BS
