step won't retract

I have a 2007 Winnebago 35j on a workhorse chassis. When my motorhome is in park and the step switch is off the step us to retract when i put the transmission in reverse or drive now it just stays out until i put the step switch in the on position and then it works fine it opens and closes with opening and closing the door. does anybody know what triggers the step when you take the transmission out of park?

There's various tests you can do to determine where your problem exists. I would go under the steps ( be careful as they may extend and retract ) and un plug all if the wires going to and from the control board to eliminate corrosion and remove the ground wire from the chassis and make sure it has a good connection

Once the MH is put in gear the step should retract overriding the step lock out switch,the brake pedel switch may need adjustment remove the wire plug and turn threaded plunger out for more switch contact.
Your bell crank may need lube because brake peddle does not operate switch.

I have not seen any Winnebago product where the step is linked to the transmission. They use a wire connected to the ignition switch run terminal that activates the step when the ignition switch is turned to that position.

There is a fuse in the fuse block under the dash on the top upper right side that is labeled "Step Warning". That fuses that line.

The same fuse also controls these items. The backup monitor, the ignition key initiated AUX solenoid activation, and the rear heater fan (if you have the MotorAid option).

I agree. Mine retracts as soon as I start the engine. No gear or brake.

12 volts DC on the yellow wire (on the 4 pin connector plug under the Kwikee step) causes the steps to retract when the ignition switch is on. As Clay L stated, check for a blown fuse providing power to the yellow wire.

Our steps won't retract at all. steps on or off...even with ignition on and MH in gear they are staying open... help!!

Same issue on my 10 TOUR. Ck ground wireS...remove each, clean and reattach...fixed my problem.

If you remove the pin and cotter pin holding the arm to the steps you can at least tie the steps back for transit.
You can also see if the steps are free to move in and out or if they are stiff and need lubrication. If they are very stiff the control board will sense a high current drain and will not operate them.
