Removing the door awning

Has anyone done it? Mine is an electric A&E on its track, but there is some sort of plastic fastener securing it. It looks like a rivit, but plastic.

Do I drill this thing? And what about reinstall??

Jeff,
I hope someone chimes in here on this subject. I'm still having the "retract" issue I've always had and, would like to get it fixed. Mine has the kind with the "elbows" that if, you put the door awning all the way out and the elbows actually straighten out, the motor will not be able to overcome the torque that's needed to re-bend the elbows and continue retracting the awning. It simply shuts down immediately. So, I too will be looking at taking that awning off and looking into what's needed to fix this thing.

Guys, I have a document from A&E that details the installation and operation of both the Automatic and Manual door awnings (Oasis and Oasis-Elite). Suspect removal is reversing the installation process.

Will be glad to scan and forward to you if you PM me your email address.

Gary

Sure! Unless that's a document I can find on their site? It just didn't appear to be A&E related being (I think) just an anti-slide screw/bolt/ rivet, etc..

I've had the same problem for years on my 2004 Meridian 36G and just kind of learned I have to be careful about how far I extend the door awning. Sometimes even then it will stop before coming completely in, wait for a while then it will resume the retraction.

Undoubtedly the electric motor must be like so many other things on these motor homes, it's just very very marginal for its duty and quits under any kind of strain. Must also be the problem with the Kwikee electric steps in that problems result if everything isn't kept adequately lubricated.

This was something that Bryan Funke at Winnebago sent to me a couple of years ago when I asked him how to remove my door awning from the coach.

Cool, I'll take whatever you have on it. I collect every manual, both operation and service for everything in the coach I can get my hands on, and its all loaded in a USB thumb drive. But I sounds like this one is missing. I'm very curious what they say about these rivet looking things.

Thanks!

OK, just give me your email address (PM if you'd prefer) and I will send it along.

smlranger,
I don't know if it will apply to mine, being it's a "Carefree" but, I'll take one too if that's ok with you. I'd surely appreciate it.

Jeff, what is wrong with the awning that you have to remove it? Viewers, for longer motor life: take the motor cover off and clean out the dirt; then drill a drain hole in the bottom of the plastic cover and reinstall.

Paints peeled off the front and rear caps, so I figured I'd pull the entire thing off and get it painted rather than taking the entire coach in

Jeff,
Wife and I removed our door awning and had it repainted. One person gets on a ladder in front of the door and removes the screws/wiring connection and slides the awning assembly towards the front of the coach -- other person removes the awning -- not heavy, but cumbersome.

If that's the reason you're removing it here's a suggestion to paint it in place as I have done.

Krylon Fusion plastic paint. Scrub it first and tape it off to avoid overspray. Very easy to do.

I've used the Krylon before on a Starlight IR fixture, LEDZILLA, and the last time on a extension pole holder.. At least 5 coats of paint, wet sanded each time, and at least 5 coats of clear, and wet sanding as well. Then at least that many coats of wax, and it still dulls in about a year. That why I wanted to have it done by someone with obviously better paint then the Krylon. Or I'm doing something seriously wrong.

If you can't get a decent job with Krylon Fusion then you could use a Pre-Val sprayer. It's just like a spray can of paint but you can use whatever paint you desire. Just load it in the small reservoir and screw it onto the propellant can then press the button to get spray.
