Propane overfill? No gas heat

I got the propane tank filled yesterday. Today i turned on the gas heat and it only blew cold air. The gas is on. I think maybe it is possibly overfilled and not functioning properly. When i turn the overflow valve it shoots out cold watery fuel. I am afraid to keep going in fear of a bigger problem. Should i keep draining the overflow valve till it stops? I have had 3 motorhomes with propane and never had this problem before. Thanks in advance

I didn't think overfilling a propane tank was possible. Have you tried turning on the stove and burning off the excess that way?

I always light the burners on the stove top after filling the propane. It seems to get all of the air out of the lines the fastest way.

Have you ever asked the LP attendant to "purge your tank?"

You may have something like a vapor lock that is causing your problem. A very simple fix and at zero dollars!!

You probably have a "high flow shutoff valve". If you turn on the main valve on the tank you can activate it. Close the valve and open it very slowly. Might take more than one try.

Components in your LP TANK

Far left....level gauge float
Large pipe....Relief Valve
Middle....the Overfill Protection Device - liquid level float that shuts off filling at 80%
Small pipe....Bleeder Valve - fixed at 80% liquid level
Far right.....vapor pipe - service valve

When filling your tank the 'service vapor' valve should be closed
The 'bleeder valve' should be cracked open (vapor will come out)
Propane is pumped thru 'fill valve' until the shutoff float stops flow and liquid propane SPEWS out bleeder valve.
Filling is secured and bleeder valve closed

Attendant then May or maybe not OPEN service vapor valve

If opened too quickly an excess flow device in lp line can be tripped

STOP opening the bleeder valve. Not necessary
Close service valve and then after couple minutes SLOWLY open it fully

Turn on stove top burners on HIGH to 'Establish propane flow and place a DEMAND on regulator' (there is no AIR in system just no flow or demand)

Remember system pressure is on 0.4 psi and regulator has to have a demand before flow can occur. (Stove top burners on high is quickest way establish that demand)

Also, is it below freezing? You may have some moisture in your tank which freezes the regulator. If it works when warm but not when freezing get a methanol injection.

Okmunkey, Ufo pilot and Old-biscuit, that worked like a charm. I turned the 3 burners on high and then turned the furnace on and presto it worked. Thanss for the advice and thank everyone who contributed to this issue. This site is tops.

Sometimes it just takes more than one brain to accomplish the difficult. I'm glad you are warm again.

Old Biscuit -- thanks for the lesson on how propane tanks work. it's good to know there is that much safety built into them.

Happy New Year everyone!
