Motohome tires

Buying a used motor home that has out of date tires 255/80R / 22.5 Michelin's A tire shop gave me a price of $4595,26 for six, balanced and installed. Another option is $2493.93 for Hercules Strong Guard HRA 16 ply for$2493.69. I have never heard of these tires. Help with purchase please
Thanks,
Gary

You can get Dayton's which are Bridgestone tires at Loves and get service at any Loves for about the same price as the Hercules tires

The FMCA has a tire discount program. I know it applies to Michelins and I think they’ve expanded it to other brands. FMCA membership has lots of other perks and isn’t very expensive to join - $85/yr.

https://www.fmca.com/rv-discount-clubs

PS. Be careful when buying 22.5” tires some lower cost brands are semi-truck tires and may not be a good choice for an RV.

Goodyear RV for us. Happy with them. If you have a tire problem in the middle of nowhere, Goodyear and Michelin RV tires are typically easier to find if you need to replace a tire and want it to match what you have on the ground already. At least that has been my experience out west in the middle of nowhere when a bolt when through the tread face... As has already been stated, truck tires are readily found in the common RV sizes but may not be the best choice for an RV application. Lastly, take a look at some of the RV tire fail videos on YouTube. Buy the best tires you can find. I view it as the cost of doing business in an RV. Compared to initial purchase, fuel, maintenance, insurance, etc.... tires are not very expensive...!

I would agree. I once rented a CruiseAmerica motorhome and it apparently had a left front blowout on a prior trip. I can't imagine what that person went through. Then having to deal with removing and replacing the tire while you're on vacation. No thanks.

Although in that case it was probably a blow out due to low tire pressure. CruiseAmerica isn't exactly big on maintenance. That same vehicle had either a cracked block or blown head gasket and they sent me out and then apparently sent someone else out. One of their shops I stopped at didn't even stock antifreeze!

Gary, to your specific question, we installed Cooper Roadmaster 225/70 - 22.5s from Redburn Tires last March. Much less expensive than Michelins. Easy to find. Made in the USA. We are closing in on 9K miles. Happy.

Don't know your location, but this thread is informative and includes discussion of the difference between 80s and 70s. http://www.winnieowners.com/forums/f...-a-355405.html

Do not understand the animas some have toward truck tires. Lets not blow smoke. My Journey is a Freightliner truck with a trailer house on top. Some of that animas may be that the 80s have lower load carrying capability and presumably softer ride. I've not noticed that in my previous 70s or my present. (While we are not blowing smoke, that could be because I'm carrying a little more tonnage in my beam ends than in years past.)(Cushion for 'da pedal pushin')

My humble opinion.

The problem with truck tires, from my point of view, is that some RV owners try to save money on tire purchases by purchasing inferior tires made for semi trailers.

There are trucking suppliers selling sub-par tires at cut rate prices and some folks think all 22.5” tires are all the same.

Tires are no place to cheap out on an RV.

Gary, keep in mind that Michelin is the only manufacturer that makes 255/80R/22.5's

I'm going to replace two 235/80R 22.5 tires on my Itasca 35F and the shop that was recommended wants 1150 for the pair, mounted and balanced. I'm going to replace the front two this year, and 2 to 4 rears next year.

I bought 8 295x80/22.5 Toyo's a year ago for ~$4500, mount & balanced all. Quote for the same w/Michilin was $8K. It'll pay to do some research and shopping around. Good Luck

I agree, do a lot of research. I had the Michelin's, Goodyears and now Toyo 144's, all in 295/80/22.5. I love Mich tires on my cars and trucks, but I'll never buy them again for the RV. Age too fast and don't keep air pressure well. The Goodyears were better handling and slowest aging (weather checking, etc) compared to the Mich's. But they wore funny on the front, so I needed to rotate them a few times.

The Toyo's have been on there for 8 months or so. I like them so far, good handling. They do loose some air pressure, more than the Goodyear's, less than the Mich's. But they get a lot of great reviews online. I really didn't think I was going to go with them, but I did a lot of research and decided to try them. I don't think they give up anything to others for quality, safety or reliability, given all the feedback I've seen on them.

I'm new to RVing but while looking to buy, it seemed to me that everything I looked had had good tread. I was told by more than one seller that tread life is generally not the issue but UV exposure is; that tires should be replaced every x years (one I remember said 4) since the tire will be weakened even though the tread is still good. Based on that, I plan on replacing my tires with the same Toyo brand now on it.

Can anyone authoritatively comment on this, please? (even non-authorities are welcomne to put your two cents in! I usually do...

In the late 1970's I used nothing but Hercules on my medium duty trucks and power wagons and they balanced up well performing smoothly on the highway and still handled construction sites and snow removal duty very well. They are an American brand that's been around for about 65 years and are well know for their truck and bus tires.

According to the Hercules web site though they do not make a 255/80R22.5 in the Strong Guard HRA which is an all position steer and drive wheel tire.
