Mystery Smell

OK, in our eight years of full timing, I've had my share of mysterious happenings, like when the generator turned itself on and I discovered that the local feral cats had made a bed next to the under-hood switch. Now I've got a mystery I've never heard of. When I apply the brakes, whether in a hard or normal stop, the coach smells of garlic...like propane, sorta. Except that the propane is always turned off for travel, both at the interior and tank switches. It only lasts for a minute or two, then dissipates. It's never happened until recently, and I haven't done anything I can imagine to cause it. Do my brake shoes have garlic liners? Our coach is an 06' Ellipse 40FD. Any ideas? And no, the feral cats are gone, so I can't blame it on them.

Sounds like the cats sprayed on your brakes.

This is an interesting one......does your MH have disk or drum brakes.? What you could be smelling is a liner heating up, on disks, the pads ride just a hair off the rotor and when the brakes are applied they close , one pad could be binding and not backing off completely..On drum brakes one of the shoes might be dragging just enough to hang up when the brakes are applied....or you could have some kind of fluid on your brakes, either grease or brake fluid...I would assume because you smell it quickly, it is coming from the front brakes....time to inspect the brakes..

Look to see if one of the hub seals is leaking oil onto the brakes.

....Or possibly some brake fluid that is leaking is getting on the rotors/pads ....brake fluid has a pungent odor when very hot/burned.

Please keep us posted.
Thanks.

I'm interested in this one. I get the same (I guess) kind of smell in my '06 Tour. Doesn't happen all the time, seems to be worse when I brake a little harder. At first, I thought it was propane, but then realized that everything was off. It's getting serviced now, so I'll let y'all know if anything shows up.

I'm not thinking of any oils as there would be "Grabbing" issues with the brakes.

OP, any more info to report on your mystery smell? I talked to the garage today, and they have found no problems with my brakes. So I guess the mystery continues....

Short in your brake lights perhaps?
Burning plastic can smell "garlicy"...

Should be easy enough to test out.

Looks like I spoke too soon. Shop just called and said I have a bearing that is leaking grease on to the brake. Off to Freightliner it goes, I guess. BTW, you guys is purty smart.

Amazing you didn't have a brake "Grabbing" issue with that.
