Kwikee steps question

Good Morning

Leaving within the hour to get the rig - 2008 Winnebago Destination - out of winter storage. Have annual state inspection set up for next week, then annual tire inspection immediately after that. (May be a necessary expensive period.)

The Kwikee steps conveniently failed the day the rig went into storage. The failed to close all they. They were unplugged, the plugs wrapped and taped to prevent damage. Then a tie strap was used to ensure they wouldn't fail open while driving.

First order of business in the driveway - troubleshoot the steps. The rig is ten years old, eleven counting the year of manufacturer. One option I am considering, replacing the motor/drive assembly. That will give me the confidence of another ten years of service.

What are your thoughts?

In my opinion and based on experience, a little investigation is in order.
The mechanism is relatively simple, and the problem could be minor - a common 'culprit' is misalignment of the magnetic switch on the screen door or perhaps a loose wire.
If not, even a more 'serious' problem such as burned out motor is a relatively simple fix. The motor is commonly used as a windshield-wiper motor on other vehicles - so if the motor does test bad, please search online to learn more. There are a bunch of postings on various sites identifying electric motors which work but at 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of an 'official' replacement. I've replaced the motor and it is not difficult - and the motor was in-stock at local car parts store.
The hardest part is crawling underneath the step to remove parts and examine - but even that isn't as difficult as some other repairs.
If you can post some photos that always helps others with suggestions - it's hard to know why the step isn't working without a tad more information.
This is a great site and folks are willing to help with just about any task that you can come up with - and the Kwikee steps are very common on a wide variety of rigs.

Well I got it home, reconnected the power.

The steps extend fully, properly and securely.

They only partially retract. Further research in progress.

Next 'step' lol

Here is a link with excellent advice and troubleshooting.
https://bobsguides.com/step-motor.html
It sounds like the next easiest thing to do is to pull the cotter pin that connects the motor to the step and try to move the step by itself. If the steps move in and out freely and without binding, then consideration turns to switches and motors.
Hope this link helps...
