Kwikee steps
I have a 1999 Winnebago Adventurer with Kwikee series 32 steps. Over a year ago the linkage broke, and since then I have tied up the steps and done without. The steps worked fine before this happened. Yesterday I bought and replaced the linkage. The steps were in the out position and seemed to be fixed. I entered the RV and cranked the engine. The steps retracted as it should (so far so good). I opened the door and the steps returned to the out position, but quickly retracted with the door open. I worked with the door moving it in and out. The steps seemed to have a mind of its own moving in and out as I played with the door. Occasionally the steps would move to the total out position, but then when I lifted my foot to step on the top step the steps retracted again. Any help out there?

Have you lubricated all the moving parts with a good silicone spray lube

good lube
Go to auto parts store and look for a spray can of "chain lube" It is a heavy duty lube that will penetrate joints and usually does not drip. The problem with silicone or WD-40 is that they do not last. You will find about 10 lube points on the steps, do them all.

I have used a bunch of these types of product and found Boshield T9 to be the best of the liter.
I use it for my steps, door hinges, basement door locks etc etc. It does not disappear like most of the others do and it does not attract dirt.
Aside from Amazon, I have also seen it at Camping World. A spray can of this stuff will last for years.

Use the T-9 lubricant spray. Not WD-40. Totally different types of lubricant.

Check the ground wire in front of the passenger side rear wheels. Just had the same problem on my '99 . The electrical diagram say the ground is behind the chassis battery on the ground bar which it is not.

I second that advise on T-9!
Regarding the erratic operation, check the magnetic switch to make sure it hasn't gotten repositioned. The magnet on the screen door has to be very close to the mating reed switch. If you have a strong magnet, you could use that to simulate a closed door.
Good luck,
Bill

The ground wire that I referred to is connected to the door switch.

Duner,
You nailed it! I repositioned the mating reed switch and now it works. Thanks to all, but especially to you!
