He might have been referring to a "fire hole" such as I have in the boat. The idea apparently is that if/ when the engine catches on fire, that you remove this cap that exposes a 4" hole (and chimney) to the engine compartment to which you're supposed to squirt the extinguisher through.

Real World: Boat fire in an enclosed space with the fuel tank 12" from the engine (and fire), I'm overboard and swimin' baby. Who knows what started that fire or what's fueling it? Once the gas line burns through and fumes are in the bilge.... Stand by!

Wehave installed an automatic fire extinguisher in our 2004 Meridian 36G by mounting it on the engine cover under the bed and drillimg a hole through the compartment to insert a short metal tube which connects to the spray head to the cannister. There is only minimal loss of storage space. Mike the Fireguy suggested this application (Fire and Life Safety.
