He might have been referring to a "fire hole" such as I have in the boat. The idea apparently is that if/ when the engine catches on fire, that you remove this cap that exposes a 4" hole (and chimney) to the engine compartment to which you're supposed to squirt the extinguisher through.
Real World: Boat fire in an enclosed space with the fuel tank 12" from the engine (and fire), I'm overboard and swimin' baby. Who knows what started that fire or what's fueling it? Once the gas line burns through and fumes are in the bilge.... Stand by!
