Checked on the fluid level in the reservoir only to find it real low. Added a quart and it brought it up the add mark.
The dip stick is marked "full hot" and "add".
The question is "when is the fluid considered "hot"? Are they indicating that I should operate the pump and systems to the point that the temperature rises to maybe 150 degrees or something?
I assume thermal expansion wouldn't be much just running the slides out and the jacks down.
I think I'll fill it to just below the full mark. The dip stick is probably generic for "standard hyd. systems."
Any comments?

I assume you are referring to the HWH pump resevoir for the slide and Jack mechanics.
On my 2002 Journey there is just a low and full marks measured with the slides retracted and the jacks stowed.
I recently had to add 2 quarts HWH fluid to bring it up to full. This was after some hose line replacements. It was still operating normaly.
So in answer to your question. I would let it sit until you feel the temp. is not HOT.
Then fill to the full mark.
Apparently from my experience there is some leeway. (HWH system}

Those are the operative words. I filled the reservoir with the jacks deployed (on my previous 2000 35U). When I retracted them, I had oil all over the place! Another mistrake.

At the HWH seminar at GNR John Canfield posted some notes that he took and indicates the following regarding hydraulic fluid level:

Slide/jack system uses Dexron III transmission fluid which will expand with heat (like after a day on the road)
o Do NOT check the fluid unless you have driven the coach for two hours
o The fluid should be approximately at the "add" mark when cold
o When you level after a day on the road, you might need to bump' (extend) the jacks a little after the fluid cools. Cooling fluid will cause a pressure drop which will cause a slight jack retraction

Thanks Hary B: I read that a few days ago and I forgot it just as fast.
Best regards

Just a final note. This AM I topped off the reservoir only to find that the dip stick is marked on both sides. One side marked "full cold" and the other marked "full hot."
Every day is a learning experience....

Cliff - are you talking about the big round black can in front of the engine?

John - your "location" shows you as still being in the Park at Forest City. If that's the case, let me know and we'll stop by and say "HI". We just arrived at the Welcome Center this afternoon (One of the 3 Canyon Mist Vectras all in a row. )

Cliff - sorry for the hijack. Do you mean the clear plastic "hydraulic fluid" reservoir above the engine bay - or is there another one?

Yes to John, it's the big black can that is the reservoir for the hydraulic system for the jacks and slides (the HWH stuff, Dexron III).
Wish I was with you folks, you're having too much fun. I just finished waxing the MH, was a 12 hr. job. But then I'm retired.....

Our HWH reservoir is under the front steps and it's big, black, and rectangular with all of the solenoids mounted on top of it--that's where I would expect it to be for other Vectras/Horizons as well. I don't recall any labelling on the 'dip stick' attached to the hex-shaped cap on ours.
