I want to mount a stainless steel bracket on the back of my View - it will hold a satellite dish that weighs about 10 lbs. What's the best or preferred manner of securing an object to the vertical exterior?

The bracket has a mounting surface measuring about 6" x 6" square and has a hole at each corner (so a total of 4) for screws/bolts/??. Can I screw into the fiberglass surface with sheet metal screws or should I use bolts that go completely through into the coach interior?

Any ideas? Thanks!

If I was going to mount something thru a fiberglass wall I would probably mount it with bolts and self locking nuts going all the way thru. I would also mount a doubler plate about twice the size of the ss bracket on the inside of the fiberglass wall.

There is a good chance that this project you are doing could cause vibration cracks around your bracket install.

Does the view have a ladder on the rear? I have seen lots of sat dishes mounted to the ladder.

Why not buy a roof mount that is designed to be mounted on the roof.

Check out 3M VHB tape. I have used it for similar jobs and it has held up very well. Some solar panel installers use to adhere the brackets for the panels to the fiberglass roofs. I was not a believer at first but after using it for a few jobs I have been convinced that it is much better than screws especially into fiberglass.
If you go to the 3M site they have some interesting videos to show the strength of the tape bond.

PeteB brings up a good point about the VHB tape. I used the tape to mount my solar panels, they are still holding strong.

I appreciate your responses! I originally thought about illustrating what I intend to mount, but then decided to just try to keep my question simple . . .

Now, in an effort to make my question make more sense, here's what I intend to mount:

http://tinyurl.com/2ucl9r

It's a VuQube satellite dish, weighs 10.5 lbs.

Seeing your picture I would just put a doubler a bit bigger than the outside bracket. Don't forget a good sealant around the bolts, I suggest 3M 4200. You can get it at most marine stores.

I thought you were gonna mount a standard size satellite dish. Lots of over the road trucks have the vue cube installed.

Got the VuQube mounted today --- thanks for the replies and help! Pretty easy to mount by including a larger piece of heavy sheet metal on the inside (and it's all in the back wall of the medicine cabinet).

BTW --- VuQube seems to be a nifty addition!

Glad it was an easy install. Please post some pictures. It could help others as you were helped.

Thanks for following thru with the results.

I also just purchased a VuQube. My posting about it's performance is in the technology forum under "New Satellite TV Dish - Smaller" if anyone is interested.

Here are some pics of the VuQube mounted on our Winnebago View. I first mounted the purchased stainless steel bracket (only other option was a black painted one), then I fabricated an aluminum rear cover to make the bracket look better.

Thanks Donavon. We are going back to Death Valley for a week at Christmas. There is little or no cable TV available where we will be staying, which is why we bought the VuQube.
