I have a read rad 02 Journey with a Cat 330...Last year I changed the coolant and put in 5 year coolant...I plan to check the SCA this summer but not sure of how or where to add it....Some one suggested plumbing an in line coolant filter in front of the heater core..This NAPA filter will add SCA automatically....Is this a good suggestion or is there an easier way to add if needed...thanks RKL

I think you just add it to your coolant reservoir and it will mix. Usually no more than 1 pint is necessary...

Check the level with an appropriate test kit and then add as needed. Use the right additive to "sweeten" to coolant, if you put in the red extended life, probably won't need any for a couple of years.
Might be a real good idea for you to have a chat with a Cat service person who is knowledgable and willing to share his knowledge of coolant. A NAPA or WIX filter dealer might have a last years master filter cross reference manual he'd let you have, a whole section in the back that addresses any coolant question you might have.

I'm certainly no expert but when I first got this rig in '05, test strip showed SCA's low. I put in one pint of Pencool additive purchased at the local FL dealer....just poured it into the reservoir..... after a brief run, the coolant tested right on

Had the system flushed and refilled last fall and I've checked it twice and its OK.

rvarner:

SCA = supplemental coolant additives.

Why would I need that? Have never heard of adding SCAs to any coolant. Am I missing something?
Thanks
Richard

Richard....The proper SCA quantities are necessary to revent erosion of the metals and linings in the cooling system with certain diesel engines....There are test strips to check the 3 specific additives levels...This info should be in your Freightliner book....

Can't seem to find it in the Freightliner book. I am looking under the "coolant replacement" section of the "OPERATOR'S/MAINTENANCE" Manual and nothing is said about SCAs.
Thanks
Richard

Richard You can also go to the Spartan Chassis section of this form -- right under form you are presently in and look at the posting for antifreeze requirements for diesel engines -- good posting there talking about SCA's and the requirements for them and why you need them.

My Coach is a 2005 Winnegabo Vectra with a CAT 350 Engine and Freightliner Frame. I have been doing research on the extended life coolant and what to use to check them.....I had decussions with Freighliner who verified they use Fleet Charge (pink in color) not "Fleet Guard" and that this extended life coolant is a two way ethylene based formula not three way coolant ..it does not contain "Molybdates". The proper test strips are the PenRay 2 Way Test Strips # PIC TS 102 and the proper coolant SCA additive is PenRay Technology #PIC 300016. The Phone # for Fleet Charge Distributors and Help Line is (800) 323-8755. I found a truck shop in my area that carried both. The test is extremely easy to do and understand. You take a sample of your coolant and not from the holding tank, dip the test strip in for 2 seconds and shake off. In 45 seconds you compare the test strip to the color guage on the side of the bottle. If there is a correction that needs to be done, it will tell you how much SCA additive to add based how how many quarts your cooling system holds.

I went in circles for a few weeks talking with Freightliner and Cat reps they all gave me conflicting stories about what type of test strips to use and how to perform the test. Finally I got disgusted went to a local Peterbuilt dealer. He simply asked me what coolant I used told me to bring in a sample used a 2 way penray strip as "kenbt"stated and I was done. Go figure!!

Thanks All,
I have no information about this in the Freightliner owners book that came with the rig but found it on their web site ("KNOW YOUR CHASSIS"). I just recently had the coach serviced and was told they would "test" the coolant. Could this be what they were talking about? If I had of known that class "A" diesels were such a PITA, I would have gone with a class "C" with a diesel. Something like the Duramax that I have for my travel trailer.

rvarner - I know just how you feel. This is my first DP and after 3 years ownership I get more confused and frustrated at lack of exacting information every day. If it wasn't for the torque of the diesels I'd sure go back to something I know more about, gasoline engines. Hopefully things will get better sometime for all of us.

I am not all the mechanically inclined but I used Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC)in my 3126. I think it lasts a lot longer than the regular coolant. There is a additive you can use, I bought it this spring and sold the coach so it went with it...Good, Safe Miles

THis is a very confusing issue. FL puts in the AF when your unit is new. They do not use expended life coolant. If you go to the Cat website there is a document called Cat lubrication guide. There is a whole section on AF and SCA'a. The coolant that FL puts in requires you to test the AF and add SCA as required. From what I have read OTR vehicles do not have this problem as they use a coolant filter that automatically adds the SCA. MH mfrs. do not normally supply these filters. If you are going to change the AF in a Cat vehicle be sure to read that document. FL wil only confuse you. They use the cheapest coolant available. Cat actually recommends the ELC product. There has been quite a discussion on this subject in the Yahoo FL forum.
