Diagnostic Port under Dash
Does anyone know where to find the diagnostic port/plug that is located somewhere under the dash on a 2004 Journey? Thanks in advance for any help!

We don't have a Journey, but I think the layout is similar to our Horizon. Our diagnostic port is just to the left of the steering column behind a carpet covered vertical panel. It's usually wired tied to another bundle of wires so you might have to move things around a bit to see it.
Good luck.

Probably has a grey cap screwed on to it about an inch in diameter.

Welcome to the forum! Good advice so far. I think you should be able to find it somewhere around the base of the steering column and it should have a round grey cap on it.
Are you looking at adding a Vehicle Monitoring System?

Thanks Denny, Daniel and Rick. I looked for it Monday and I think I saw the grey cap but for some reason it didn't register in my brain, I know the one on the back of the coach has a cap over it. I talked to Freightliner help yesterday and they confirmed there is one there, probably behind or mixed in with the other wires. I will look when pick it up Friday for the weekend.
Yes Rick, I am looking to tie in the Silverleaf lead.
Thanks for the help.

OK, guys, I'm clueless on this one. What is a Silverleaf monitoring system?

Look up:
SilverLeaf Electronics, Inc. | Knowledge is Horsepower
I have the VMSPC box which interfaces the diagnostics connector to a laptop.

Check it out. VMSpc | SilverLeaf Electronics, Inc.
The PC version works on a laptop (I have a netbook mounted on my dash) and plugs in to the diagnostic port. It monitors all available data on the chassis diag bus and you can configure it to display any or all of that data in any type of "dashboard" you want on your laptop screen. It also translates any fault codes which pop up.
For gadget nuts (like me) it's a must have.

Silverleaf Electronics has developed a vehicle monitoring system that works with your laptop. The software is free, but you need their wiring and connector to tap the diagnostic port. Use this link to learn all about the software. The hardware is available from one of our sponsors RVUpgrades

Guess I'm the slowest to respond. Sorry for the duplication.

Are you guys happy with the VMSpc? My information center is the earlier one that is impossible to see, unless you sit on the floor right in front of it. It appears the VMSpc gives all the information the info center does, plus a lot more. FedEx should be delivering it today. So happy we found IRV2, so much information and help available!

In previouw coach I had a Jotto Desk mount for my laptop right next to driver's seat with laptop hooked up to TV/lcd monitor just above. Windows running VMSPC at the bottom of the screen and Street Atlas (with GPS) at the top. Couldn't have been happier with functionality/reliability. I think the new VMSPC software (updates are free) provides even more info re fault codes... I now have TripTek and GPS and backup monitor all hooked up to my in-dash radio (an Alpine). I will probably still hook up the VMSPC (mostly for fault codes) later on...

I have a 2002 Journey DL 36GD. I found the 6 pin plug to the left of the steering column mounted on a small bracket against the firewall. It was buried under 3 or 4 inches of wires. It's grey with a screw on cap just like the one mounted over your radiator. I purchased the silverleaf pc product and it works great. I built a small shelf which mounts on the wall just above the hwh jack buttons. I bought an Acer 10" netbook from Wally to use as display. It works perfect. I display the silverleaf guages on the left side using about 2" of the display. The remainder of the display is used by Delorme street atlas. Since the shelf is just to the left of the steering wheel, I have no problem actually seeing the data.

Does the Scanguage II and VMSpc show the same info or is there a noticeable difference?
Can the VMSpc be used on gas and diesel engines?

Hopefully they changed from 02, when I talked to Freightliner Help (they had my serial #) he told me it was a 9 pin plug. Ordered it from SilverLeaf and have it in my hand..... guess I will find out tomorrow when I get it from the Storage Building. The Netbook sounds like a good idea. Thanks

I don't think SilverLeaf makes one for gas engines........... but not sure, you can search it online. I don't know about the Scanguage II.

Here are some pic's of the Acer 10.1' netbook and shelf I built that it sits on. I run the Silverleaf product and Delorme Street Atlas. Both are easy to see as the shelf is just to the left of the steering wheel and at steering wheel height. I was able to fit all of the guages I needed to show on the left hand side of the screen. No conflicts between the usb gps antenna and the silverleaf usb cable.

limandlin, was the adjustable shelf custom built? Is the laptop attached with Velcro?

My VMSpc runs full screen on a 15" Laptop and it sits on the dash to the right of the driver. No need to take eyes off the road to see it.
I also run GPS Co-Pilot full screen on a 15" Laptop that sits on a table to the right of the drivers seat.

Yes, I built it out of a piece of red oak and 1/8" aluminum stock from Home Depot. It attaches to the wall with multiple strips of double sided tape. I attached velcro to the bottom of the netbook and the surface of the shelf. The hardest part was getting all of the bends right so it ended up in the right place. I needed to be able to see the outside mirror without restriction and reach the headlight and exhuast brake switches. And it had to be close enough to see without taking my eyes off the road. I made a form out of cardboard to use as a template. I attached an extra brace between the bracket and the window frame to reduce the tendency to pull away from the wall. The Acer netbook only weights 2.5 pounds, so the mount should hold up well while driving. Kind of hard to see in the picture. The netbook power cord plugs in right above the drivers area in the overhead compartment. The gps antenna sits on the dash along with 2 small speakers that work with Delorme Street Atlas. The Silverleaf is a great product...it can be configured to show everything your engine computer outputs. It can also interpret and display engine diagnostic codes.
