Burnt Rubber Smell Onan QG5500 genset
When running the generator I get a burnt rubber smell from bottom of genset. I've read that the belt rarely goes bad and is inaccessible unless you remove unit. The gen works - is in 2016 Sunova 33C with less than 30 hours on it. Anyone have/had this problem? Thanks

Two truisms. The belt rarely goes bad, and it is quite inaccessible. (Why aren't ALL gensets mounted on drawer slides?)
Several possibilities. The belt pulleys could be out of alignment. The lower is attached by one "jesus bolt". The upper by four. Incorrect torque will misalign.
Your Onan has a flexible water hose long enough to pull out several inches when changing coolant. Cut too short or too long, it could touch the manifold and burn.
Another possibility, perhaps rubber/plastic road debris has lodged against the genset exhaust where it exits the housing.
At 2 years and 30 hours, is it still under warranty? Have Onan look at it.
Good luck.

Thanks Terry for the suggestions - will check it out. Warranty only to original buyer. From underneath I can actually see the belt through the cooling fan vanes - it looks ok and the is no belt dust or debris visible.

This should probably go without out saying, buuuut, if and when you find out the cause of the problem, could you report back. Like to close these loops to help others. Thanks

I'm a bit behind on this computer stuff - but what or how is closing this loop helping others? Thanks,BMcD.

Keep in mind that the burnt rubber smell can come from rubber dust coming up from the highway, settling on the generator engine & exhaust.
I have experienced this problem with my toad. After traveling, towing my small truck, for 2-3 days and hundreds, perhaps over a thousand miles, shortly after starting the truck I get a burnt rubber smell until the rubber is burnt off.
Just keep in mind where all the rubber that wears off your tires goes. Right onto the highway until a good rain washes it off on to the side of the road. Thousands upon thousands of vehicle traveling the same hwy leaves lots of rubber on the road.

I got that same smell off my furnace after many road miles and no furnace running, it went away. The same could happen with genes. Also happens on my toad. Freaked me out first time. same smell.

My toad always stinks of burnt rubber after dragging it 2000 miles (down to Arizona). It takes a couple of days of driving it to burn stuff off the exhaust pipes in the engine compartment. First time it happened, it freaked me out too. Thought I'd smoked a tire on the way down. Of course the tires were all in good shape.

Thanks to all who replied - never had considered tire dust before but will now. I will run genset several times over the winter and will pay close attention to it - if smell goes away then will consider it burned off. Thanks again, BMcD

Follow Up Burnt rubber smell.
Turns out nothing was wrong with genset-just road dust as others posted after traveling. Thanks to all who posted-so glad I did not have to pull genset.
