Adjusting day-night shades

Hi -
Assuming that you mean the day-night shades that are typical:
There is a screw at the bottom left and bottom right of the shades which have plastic 'tie down wheels' for the cords in the shades.

Using a phillips screwdriver, loosen the screw holding the plastic tie-downs in place on one side or the other. Be sure to hold the plastic 'wheel' while you are loosening. You will see where the wheel will pull away from the wall once you have backed out the screw enough. Turn the wheel to tighten the cord as the cord winds around the wheel; not too tightly, but tightly enough that the tension is appropriate to raise the shade and it stays without falling. While holding the wheel in the new position, tighten the screw back down, and you are done. Repeat for the other side.

This is easier than it sounds written out, but hard to mess up except for the possibility of over-tightening the cords and/or the screw. If too loose - no problem - just loosen the screw and re-tighten the cords.

Hope this helps...

John gave a pretty good description, I'll just add this. When you pull out on the 'wheel' it should turn 1/4 turn then sit back into the base. Start by tightening each side 1/4 turn. Then another 1/4 turn if needed. You should tighten each side equally. There's a spring centered inside the shade at the top. Too much pressure on one side will pull the spring off center. Too much off center can mess things up.

Also only loosen the screw enough to disengage the locking nubs that grip into to the wall so you can turn the wheel without grooving the wall (leaving nothing for them to grip afterwards). Loosen it too much and you can damage the screw or the hole its set in making it so you will need a new screw and possibly to make a new hole to mount it in. Keep a firm grip and yes quarter turn adjustments equally on both sides. Verify that any plastic ferrules to protect the cord from fraying are still in place before you begin since if they have slid out of the top bottom or dividing rails you can quickly end up with snapped cords.
