Basement heat pump unit quit cooling & spikes 50+ amps at start up

My 2007 Winne Voyage has the infamous basement air (Coleman Mach) unit & began spiking 50+ Aps on start up and quit cooling altogether. It will try to start, make thumping sounds and stop, then try to crank the compressor again every 10 secs or so. I had it plugged into a 30 amp outlet and it was cooling for 2 days before the problem. I've scanned this forum (including Duners great presentation)and have found a lot of info on this unit but no problems like mine. I don't know jack about air conditioning, don't want to be at complete mercy of service facility. Am I looking at a new compressor or could it be something else? Want to have all the info I can before I take it to the shop.

Thanks for any help, I sincerely appreciate it.

Welcome,

Start capacitor, possible potential relay would be the first choices.

Be safe.

Sounds like mine did and it was both start capacitors gone bad. Cost me about $200 to a mobile mechanic.

Yup, start capacitor would be my guess, too. I would keep it off until you can get it serviced. Very hard on the compressor motor windings to try to start under those conditions.

Sincere thanks everyone for the advice. I can go to the repair guy with knowledge and forewarned. Unless I can find another strong guy to help me pull it out.......

Easy to physically check and replace the start caps. When this first happened on my previous Adventurer, I turned off #2 compressor breaker, then swapped out the start caps. Worked on one compressor until I got a new set.

There is a small square device on top of the start cap which is usually the culprit.

There is the chance it could be a locked compressor.

All good advice above, and also, you can get residential HVAC guy to take a look at it rather than an RV repair shop. The "knocking" part of our your description does not sound like a capacitor issue to me.

Try killing the power (first) to one compressor and then the other at your breaker panel and then turning on the air. See if one of them runs okay by itself and not the other.

If you need to call a tech, having the unit ready to pull out will save you $$$$$. There are several threads that talk about removing the unit. Not a terrible job.

Some good news, if the problem is start cap, you don't have to pull the unit out. There's a black panel on left side, one or two screws and you have access to the caps, relays, and control board. (After you unscrew and hinge up the outside panel.)

There are LEDs on the board that give troubleshooting info. The service manual has pretty darn good trouble charts to guide you thru a process to find fault. I don't readily have the link to the service manual, maybe someone can provide that link for you on the RVP support page.

The start capacitors pack a big electrical charge so beware if you work on it yourself.
