Basement Air Problem

I am having a problem with my basement air on a 2010 Journey 40L and wanted to see if any has had a similiar problem.

I was preparing for a short 100 mile weekend trip and had started the generator in order to run the AC for a few minutes while preparing the coach for the trip. After starting generator, turned AC on and let it run for about 15 minutes. AC ran fine at this point. When we were ready to leave home, I turned the AC off as well as the generator for the short drive to the campground for the weekend.

Upon arriving at campground, the first thing I always do is to plug into the 50 amp shore power in order to get the AC started while setting up (keeps someone else happier when they are cool while I am setting up the coach).

I turned off breaker switch on shore power and plugged into 50 amp service at campground. I came inside coach and turned AC on. I can't remember if AC started at this point as I went back outside to continue the setup of coach.

I leveled coach and did a couple of more things outside and came back inside to find that the AC was not working, not did I have power to anything inside. Upon checking the breakers, I found that the main coach circuit breaker when also has the AC #1 and #2 compressors attached to it had been tripped. I was able to reset these breakers and the AC started running once the delay time had passed.

The AC is blowing "cool" but not cold. It seems as though compressor #1 is working but no matter how far I set the thermostate down, compressor #2 does not kick in. It took about 10 hours to cool the coach down from 80 degrees to 73 degreees after dark with the outside temp being around 71.

Anyone know if there is a reset or something that needs to be done in this situation in order to get #2 to kick in. I also understand that for whatever reason, the second compressor could also have gone out.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Randy...couple of things to check...The park power may have been only 30 amp and when your #2 compressor came on it blew the coach breaker....Disconnect from the shore power and start your generator and turn on the AC...Observe the amp guage and see if the second will come on ...#1 compressor will run at about 16 amps and when the #2 comes on, it will spike and then show about 22 amps...This is the best way to see if it is the #2 failure or a park power issue....RKL

I did try the AC using the generator and it settled at 16 amps so that leads me to believe the 2nd compressor is not working. I've got an appointment to take in and have looked at in a couple of weeks - sounds like it is quite in depth to replace the compressor since the lines also have to be recharged again. There goes the Labor Day excursion!!

basement lt air problem

Randy ,,,,don't give up yet....In May in Florida my 2nd compressor wouldn't start....AC repair person found a burnt wire in the electric panel of the AC and replaced it and aput in a new start capacitor for the # 2 and all is now well...He said rare to have the compressor go...good luck RKL

I would also check that both circuit breakers on Genset are set correctly, and that the #2 compressor circuit breaker is not tripped.

Also, when on gen power can you see on the amp meter if the #2 compressor is trying to start. The start cap could have gone south.

When I took delivery of my coach new, the #2 compressor would not turn on. I did some checking and called RVP and they suggested checking the connection at the AC unit for power. I opened the grill covering the AC unit, 2 screws from the bottom edge. Then you open the left end of the AC unit, a panel removed with a couple screws. What I found was the wire connector going to the AC for #2 compressor, they each have their individual wires, out of the connector. It was very obvious and I simply inserted the wire and tightened the connector. It has worked without problem since then.

Much quicker than taking to the dealer.

I have checked the circuit breaker to make sure it is not tripped which it is not. About 30 seconds after I turn the air on, I do hear another "click" in the thermostat which might be the thermostat trying to send the message to compressor #2 to start helping, but it never actually kicks in.

How good are you at electrical troubleshooting? If you have a clamp on amp meter you can check the amp load where the circuit to the #2 compressor feeds the circuit board in the heat pump unit. Also check voltage there. If no amp draw is indicated, find the relay that switches the #2 compressor and determine if voltage is leaving it going to the compressor. The load management system controls this relay, and the LMS can be wired around to check that it is not cutting the #2 compressor circuit out. Odds are good that the circuit board in the heat pump has died. RVP will sell you one direct. There is a fair amount of rewireing required if the board is replaced by an upgraded version. Any competent HVAC technician can work on these units, as they are very similar to home units.

The wire you need to put the amp clamp around is ORANGE. It connects between the #2 compressor relay and [U]probably[U] a ORANGE with BLACK TRACER wire. The relay is a black rectangular device not on the PC board but in the upper right corner of the electronics area. the top one is the #1 compressor and the next one down is the #2 compressor.
The load management system controls this relay, and the EMS can be wired around to check that it is not cutting the #2 compressor circuit out. The "wire around" is pretty easy....holler if you need instructions.
Odds are good that the circuit board in the heat pump has died. RVP will sell you one direct. There is a fair amount of rewireing required if the board is replaced by an upgraded version. Any competent HVAC technician can work on these units, as they are very similar to home units.
Reconnecting a new PC board is not that difficult assuming you can read and follow written instructions that come with the new board. There are about 20 wires to change out. One more thought is to go to Welcome to RV Comfort and find your unit and read the Service Manual. I think your control board has an LED on it that will blink to diagnose.

If you're not comfortable working with 110volt AC then just ignore all the above and take it to a shop. Good luck.

How things have changed....a few years ago I needed #2 relay and RVP would not sell direct to me. I called Lichtsinn Mtrs. got it thru them.
