Why not just remove the inner door? BTW AFChap, what did you use to cut side vents on the inner door?

Thanks for the explanation. My water heater opens directly on the outside wall of the MH. I appreciate the education. I hope someone will chime in on my gas water heater problem.

The "inner" door is metal, and somewhat contains the fire when you have a backflash. It also no doubt controls the turbulence of the air around the combustion chamber ...the problem seems to be that it controls air flow TOO much for many of us!

I used a dremmel tool to cut the side vents in my metal inner door.
