Air Horn Stopped Working..??

Hi Guys:

Well I took out the coach for my wifes first driving lesson. She did pretty good for never ever driving anything bigger than her Acura MDX.

I flipped on my air horn swich on the dash, went to hit the air horns to show her how loaud they are and nothing...just the little beep of the regular horn?? What gives? Did I blow a fuse or something?

Regards Jim P.

I have a set of Hadleys and I am normally changing the solenoid that opens the flow to the horns. Of course your setup maybe a lot different. What makes the horn work is the ground wire so check that first.

My air horn would work intermittently. What I found through reading this forum, is that some times the solenoid was sticking. I pulled the air line (easy to do as it is a fitting that you push down and the air line slips out) and the put a drop of 3-in-1 oil in the solenoid. It started to work more frequently and now works perfectly. My little guy liked pressing the horn to get it to work.

When in Quartzite last year Monaco Mama and Sacs had a problem with their airhorn solenoid sticking. I think Sacs was going to replace it, but Happycars (who else?) demonstrated how to take it apart and lubricate it.

Had I paid more attention I maybe could have told you how this is done but I didn't. If you contact Sacs or Happycars I am sure that they will share their knowledge and save you an airhorn solenoid.

I had to have my solenoid replaced within a year of it being new, but I didn't think to have the Tech show me where the thing really is. Can anyone explain where the thing is and what it looks like (just in case it goes out again)?

On my Journey 39K the horn solenoid is located behind the air outlet in the front hood compartment above the generator on the drivers side.

How many lines or wires will it usually have in/out of it so I'll know what I'm looking for? There's so much crap behind the hood around the generator I never know what is which or vice versa.

See picture below for location of solenoid.

Here is a shot of the solenoid. It is not the stock solenoid. It has a 3/8" air hose going in and a 1/4" hose out. It has 2 electrical wires coming off.

Excellent Pictures, wish I had the camera and knowledge to do all that. I'll give a look tomorrow and see if mine looks like that, hope so.

Just a side note, doesn't the regular horn continue to beep in conjunction with the air horn even when you select the air horn? Mine does and I think some of you told me that was normal. Is my memory correct?

flashnyellow-

Thanks again for the pictures. I've seen that thing before setting there behind the air pressure gauge and just assumed it had something to do it. And I never had seen the wires going to it either. You guys with the cameras posting pictures for us diesel newbies are terrific. These diesels have so many solenoid, switches, relays, and so on with air and electrical hook-ups I never know which does what. And I sure don't want to be unhooking something just to see what won't work then.

No problem with the pictures. I'm new to diesel MH's also but like to help when I can. Something else I noticed is that when I have the air horn switch on and blow the horn I hear the small horn for a few seconds and then the air horn.

Mine too, guess the electrical connection reaches the small horn before the air solenoid can react and get air to the upper horns. Seems like it would have been simply enough for Winny to have a disconnect for the little horns run through the selector switch for the air horns. Always sounds kind of punny when that pathetic little plep comes out just before the air horns sound. Guess if that's the worst of our worries with these beasts we'll just have to live with it.
