Air Dryer Question

Several of you saw my post from last Sunday when my air dryer stopped moving air to my brakes. After some great information on this site I was able to bypass the dryer and my air system came up to normal levels.

I am now at home and considering the next steps for repairing the dryer. It looks as though I can buy a remanufactured one online or I can purchase the kit that many here have purchased that will allow me to rebuild it myself. Has anyone done this and how difficult is it? Thank you!

Most times removing the dryer from the chassis is the worst part of the process. Re-build instructions should come with the kit . But here's some info on the common M/H, dryers.

I've put the kit in mine twice and it is not a major chore if you are somewhat mechanically inclined. On mine it was pretty dirty down there but I cleaned it as best I could before removing the bolts and lines.

I seem to remember that you said it had been 7-9 year range with no service. Since it totally quite on you, I might spring for the reman unit if it's not prohibitive. I think the kit is fairly pricy.

Kit contains canister and mostly O rings, pretty simple, use lube on the O rings.

Hi,

Where are the kits purchased? How much does the Haldex kit cost?

check the pricing on the parts to rebuild versus a reman unit, you may find difference may be the deciding factor.

GaDawgFan,
As has been stated, rebuilding them is not all that hard. Getting them off the coach, while also not very hard, is primarily just awkward. You may need some big wrenches. I forgot what size I used but, they're not used very often due to size.

Anyway, there's at least two different models of air dryer out there in RV land and, I'd just about bet my house that yours in your model/year/chassis coach, is the same exact one as mine. And, the kit used is called a "DQ 6026" if I recall. The link below "SHOULD" be the one you'd need.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Haldex-Midland-DQ6026-General-Service-Kit-For-Pure-Air-Plus-Air-Dryers-/371453879374?hash=item567c60644e:g:~50AAOSw42JWDX7 R&vxp=mtr

If your air dryer is what I think it is, there's more than just O-rings and one canister in it, as the link will show. I did mine in about three hours, start to finish which, included removing and re-installing it under the big beast. I paid about $65.00 on ebay for one just like that one. The packaging was just like what's described on that link but, the internal packaging for the components was unharmed and sealed.

For $85.00, that's a good deal. And, it's good for about 3 or more years, depending on how many miles you accrue and, what kind of atmosphere you primarily operate your coach in.
Scott

I never had to rebuild mine but when I replaced the cartridge on the '02 Dutch Star I looked the unit over and it looked like an easy rebuild even if done in frame. The two times I replaced the cartridge (over 13 years) I never found any moisture nor corrosion in the body of the dryer.

I bought a repair/rebuild kit from a local HDT repair shop, they have them in-stock. BTW, their price for a new desiccant filter was lower than on the internet.
Here is the Meritor/Wabco System Saver 1200 service manual
and the maintenance manual
Here is the Haldex air system tech support site.
For buying online, anythingtruck.com has everything for an air system.
This may help with your project. As you see, they are not that complicated. The main point is cleanliness, just a speck of dirt will cause problems.
I suggest pressure-washing the underside of your MH around the air dryer before disassembling anything to remove years of accumulated road dirt and oil.
