A/C service

I have A 2004 Winnebago Vectra

I recently had the A/C serviced a (Coleman basement unit) and was told the amps and coolent fluid was low and the unit was not working properly and would need to be replaced at A cost of $3599.50 plus labor. I was told this was a sealed unit and could not be repaired.

The unit worked fine and I haven't noticed any decrease in the cooling capasity. We spent the summer in the n Ga Mountains and some days the temp reached 95 it run most of the time but did the job.

The service was an annual which we do before we leave for Fl for the winter.

Please share your experence on this subject. Please make me

Thank You,

Curtis Tanner

I would get another opinion, if it works fine or if it ain't broke don't fix it.
They are talking a lot of sheckles, I have had three coaches with basement air without any problems..

First thought: Sealed unit normally means you cannot add nor monitor coolant level so, how where the able to determine the unit was low on coolant fluid? Though they could of meant the compressor was shot and it would be better to replace the unit rather than repair.

Second thought: A compressor has to work harder when coolant is low therefore the amperage would either be the same or increase.

Get a second opinion

Is this the place you have been taking your unit for it's annual? How many basement air units has/does this guy work on? Get a second opinion. If you are not experiencing any problems I would be suspect.

I think you are dealing with someone who is trying to make up for slow motorhome sales. There is a piercing valve for sealed AC's. Run, don't walk away from this guy.

Here are the people to go to for AC diagnosis and repair.

On your panel thats shows the amps being used when on 30 amp service or on generator it will show low amps, when you are low on freon, either on the #1 or #2 compressor side of your AC.
You should show in the mid twenties when both pumps are kicked in.
I had a leak in the #1 compressor and my amps dropped to 20 and poor cooling.
The leak was repaired and the unit was recharged with freon and the amps jumped back to the mid 20s and cold air.
