2010 Via Batteries

I just replaced my batteries on the Via. Located in the step well they are open to the bottom of the coach. I live in Oklahoma and the problem with them was they froze. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to insulate them to protect them? I am from the south. Because I had not winterized ever I stupidly did not consider winterizing. Cost me: 1 Keurig coffee maker (inside tank froze and burst), a waterheater (1000.00) and now 2 batteries (350.00) this year I winterized. Had it done professionally. Small price to pay compared to cost of frozen. Any ideas?

If the RV is stored for the winter, remove the batteries and store them in an area where they won't freeze.
