Winnebego Tow Wiring Harness

Does the 6 pin harness installed at the factory have a 12 volt supply? I am not getting any signal with a test light

Please explain a little better. Are you speaking of the connector on the rear bumper?

Here is the diagram of your trailer connector. I hope it helps: http://www.winnebagoind.com/diagram/2000/132542.pdf

Yes. I am talking about the connector on the rear bumper. I just bought a new 2014 Explorer to replace my previous toad. I was advised to have a charge wire tied into the wiring harness. I am just not sure that there is a constant 12 volt pin coming from the Motorhome.

I just had the time to really look at the wiring diagram I hooked you up with. Your connector has no provision for a charging 12V source. You will have to bring a fused tap off the battery to the car. You may find this from a buss or a spare fuse location.

You may need isolation diodes to your car. I know there are folks out there, even the local U-Hall, who will help you get set up correctly.

Happy trails.

I appreciate your help. Based on what I have read, the middle pin in a five point connector should be a dedicated 12 volt source. The question is if Winnebago hooked it up correctly.

Yes, this what I thought I had. The center pin would be the 12 volt that could be used as the battery charge wire in the toad.

Please look closely at the wiring diagram of your coach. (If you are unfamiliar, Ctrl + or - will zoom what is on your web page.) Your Aux lead is wired to the backup lights. You could bring a protected battery lead to this pin and drop the backup light connection. How often do you use extra backup lights? I never have.

This information is correct. There is no 12v source in the 6-pin connector.

I haven't done it yet, but my plan is to drop the backup light wire off the center pin and run a new 12v wire to that pin. I installed the same 6-pin connector on my car. The center pin on the car is blank now. When I run the charge wire, I'll connect the car's battery to that center pin.

I haven't yet found a need for a charge wire, as I have a 2006 CR-V with no "always on" power drain. I have towed for three days in a row with no battery problem.

check pin #4..... should already have 12vdc there. If not, that's where I would connect the 12vdc to. Why use the center pin when you already have a pin dedicated to your need?

I use pin four for battery charge....fused at the toad and also a heavy duty diode on the battery feed...

When I set mine up for my toad, I found that the 12V did not appear until I turned on the ignition. So when you are checking to see if you have voltage there on pin 4, you may want to turn on the ignition first.

You also have to remember that if you keep your toad hooked up when parked overnight and the ignition turned on in the toad, you do not have any power going out to keep the toad's battery charged. I forgot and found out the hard way with a dead battery in the toad.

Thank you all for the advice. Pin 4 was the 12 volt source and it worked perfect. Installed a Breakbuddy charge wire with diode and it worked as advertised. Thanks again!

I, too, thank you all for the pin 4 heads up. I didn't catch that on the wiring diagram. Good to know.

You're looking at a 7-pin connector, which has 12v on pin 4. The OP has the same coach as I, with a 6-pin connector. It doesn't have any 12v connection. It has backup lights on the center pin. We don't need the backup lights, as most tow systems tell you "Don't back up". ON EDIT: I retract my statement about Dawg's coach; it looks like he has a 7-pin connector, even though the factory wiring included a 6-pin like mine.

Just to clarify. My cable is a 6 pin to 6 pin. I was able to confirm that pin #4 supplies constant 12 volt (with the ignition key turned on). This is the pin the guys installing my brackets used when hooking up the charge wire. I just got back from a trip to Savannah last week and am happy to report this set up worked great. It was nice not having to open the hood and pull a fuse like I used to with the GMC Acadia. Thanks for all the help here.
