Flat Towing a Smart Car

Hi, Does anyone have any feedback pertaining to flat towing a 2015 Smart Fortwo (Smart Car) behind a 33' Winnebago Vista. I have been told that you don't need a supplement braking system with a Smart Car??

Most states require that you have some kind of breakaway system that will stop the towed vehicle before it becomes a road hazard. A supplemental braking system fills that role. Even the 2000 lbs of the Smart Car will affect your braking on the motorhome. I suggest you look into a portable system, like an RVi3, to use in your Smart.

Regardless of the various state laws, it isn’t safe...for others...not to have a breakaway brake system. Two tons of disconnected toad can kill.

Ever emergency stopped in your Vista? Such as some dope left turning in front of you. Happy with the Vista’s performance? Now add TWO thousand pounds. Think you’ll still be happy without with the toad helping you stop?

We pulled our 2009 Smart Fortwo Passion behind our 5th wheel and our Class A. Used a Brake Buddy Classic for supplemental braking. Worked great and you can move it from toad to toad as we have (Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500 to our current 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman S). It's only let us down 1 time in the 9 years we've had it, then a compressor fitting broke inside, sent into Brake Buddy for repair ( cost us about $100) and was sent back within a 2 week span. Make sure you follow the towing instructions for flat towing your Smart, you will also need to install a battery disconnect (I used the one with a red key and hide it in the glovebox, easy to install sense the battery is located under passenger floorboard), Out of site out of mind.
