Savannah Ga Charleston SC

Good Evening All

We are looking to take a trip to Savannah, Charleston area around Christmas time this year.

We have never been to this area and were needing what the best RV parks there are in the area. We have a 2003 38g with a 14' trailer with a Polaris Slingshot.

Thanks for any and all advise

Devon-

In Savannah, we have stayed twice at Skidaway Island State Park.

In Charleston, we stayed once at Oak Plantation Campground. It is a bear to get into or out of, depending on approach direction. Otherwise, it is conveniently located.

In Savannah we stayed at Topke Island Rivers End Campground. It is a fifteen minute drive from the island to the city. There are great seafood places along the way as well.

In Savannah we always use the trolley system. They have lots to park you car and you can get on and off anytime you want. Another comes along every few minutes.

It's been a few years but in Charleston we stayed at a KOA outside of the city. It was well maintained and shady.

This is not Oak Land.

+1 Skidaway Island SP was really a nice state park. VERY tree covered almost dark due to the dense tree covering when we were there in the Spring. There was a great Publix supermarket just down the road from there.

Hilton Head Island is very close to Savannah and there is a luxury motorcoach park there: Home - Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort

There is the Savannah South KOA in Richmond, Ga just off I-95. We mostly overnight there on our trips to/from Florida but have also spent a few days visiting the area. It is your typical KOA for RV slots but the facility is clean and easy to get to. I'm a light sleeper and only complaint is like many private campgrounds there is a train on the opposite side of the hwy that always seems to go through just as I'm drifting off to sleep. I can't speak for Charleston as we have never taken the trailer there.

We have stayed at Rivers End Campground on Tybee Island several times. We will be there again in a couple of weeks. It's about as save as you can get. Tybee Island City owns and operates the campground and the police department building backs up to the campground. Easy walk to the beach and lighthouse. Campground is your typical lined up like sardines commercial layout with full hookups. It's a short drive into Savannah. The trolley tours are great.

Skidaway Island is where we have stayed. You should have no problem with the sites because they are all pull through and parallel to the road. That provides a good deal of privacy. There are trails for hiking or biking. We biked the trail and enjoyed it, but you will be running over a lot of tree roots on portions of the trail. There are a lot of scenic views that make for beautiful photos.

We took our bikes into Savannah and rode around the streets. We did this the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve and the weather was great.

We are also thinking about stopping at Savannah in December but we will not be towing. Is there any way to get from the Skidaway Island RV park to Savannah itself without renting a car?

There is no public transportation from Skidaway Island to Savannah. I don't know if Uber of Lyft would work there or not.

Skidaway is not close to Savannah. I believe it was about a twenty minute drive. Not having a tow vehicle would make it pretty difficult. Another thought, in addition to Uber, is to rent a car while you are in the area. You will have to make priorities and compare costs.

We spent Thanksgiving in Charleston. James Island County Park didn't have any space available so we ended up at Oak Plantation. James Island looked nice from the drive through. As to Oak Plantation while it was clean it is old and could use some renovating of the facilities. We were in the back section where they also have their seasonal and long term guests. While I didn't see any sheds there were stored boats. Many of the trailers were older and dirty giving the area a run down look. The Wi-Fi at our site was abysmal. There isn't a whole lot for kids so I would classify this more as an adult park for folks day tripping into Charleston. All said we would stay there again but only if we couldn't get a site at another campground.
