NH to Mt. Rushmore to Yellowstone

Traveling in a 30 FT Sunstar in mid August from NH to Mt. Rushmore and then onto Yellowstone. Looking for input on best routes, what to avoid, where to stay. Would like to drive out in about 4 to 5 days and spend our time touring the parks. Plan on renting a car when we arrive. Don't mind boondocking along the way. Thanks for all responses!

I’m doing this trip 2nd of July. As of right now I’m planning on leaving Portsmouth NH heading up through VT and then a Canadian route that ultimately leads to WI. It’s an extra 100 miles but you get to avoid Chicago. Spending a night at Walmart in Pembroke ON, then at a Casino campground in Sault Ste Marie, MI. From there it’s a 1 day drive to Badlands area where we will KOA camp for a few nights. Still planning the rest of the trip right now.

Curious if anyone else has experienced this route?

We haven't done the drive east of Sioux St Marie, but the western part we have. Northern Michigan is pretty sparse so get fuel whenever available. Northern Michigan is very picturesque however.

Don't know which badlands you mean, North Dakota or South Dakota. Whichever, I doubt you can do it in a one day drive. We live south of the Twin Cities and either one is at least a three day drive for us. Both are over a thousand miles from Sioux St Marie as the crow flies.

If you take the Southern route I would slip south and take I70 west. No tolls, less traffic, better highway, except for Indiana which is pretty rough, and that avoids Chicago. From Indianapolis I would take I39 to I90, then follow that to the South Dakota Badlands.

We have taken the toll road through Chicago and I39, but if you hate heavy traffic, go south.

Yeah it’s a 1050 miles, 2 days of travel for us, thanks for catching that.

We were in the Badlands just before Memorial Day. We stayed at the Badlands Motel & Campground just outside the southern gate of the park; I believe the KOA is a bit further down the road. When we were there the rain and wind were unrelenting; half the campground was flooded and travel on any road not paved was a muddy mess; many roads were closed due to flooding.

We stayed at the Dakota Campground in Mitchell, SD (also half flooded) en route to the Badlands. If you haven't seen the Mitchell Corn Palace it is worth the side trip. If you were wanting to tour the Minuteman Missile command center you need to make your reservations at least 24 hours in advance. The visitor center and silo don't require reservations.

Safe travels.
