Memphis

Headed to Memphis this week - planning on staying at T.O. Fuller SP. Plan on checking out Beale St. and Sun Studios - where are the parts of the city that we want to avoid?

I cannot answer your question on what to avoid, but do see the Bass Pro Shop in the pyrimid. It is very worth seeing even if you don't hunt or fish. Plan on eating at one of the restaurants and go up to the observation deck. We enjoyed the Tom Sawyer RV park in West Memphis. It is right on the Mississippi river and the tow boats with barges pass close by.

I second Tom Sawyer. They are a heath of information about the area as well. The Memphis Botanical Gardens are nice as well. As for avoiding places....use common sense. If an area looks rough....stick to main streets, don't wander into liquor stores. Don't wander around neighborhoods at 0200.

We like Tom Sawyers as well. Easy drive across river to Bass Pro, Beale St. and other east side attractions.

The first place I would avoid would be T.O. Fuller Park. Not due so much for safety in the park, but in getting to it. You could choose a nearby Jellystone south of Memphis, the Marion, AR KOA, The Agricenter in Memphis, or a couple others nearby.

We've stayed in Memphis a bunch of times as our daughter was a school teacher there for a few years. Liked Tom Sawyer right on the river, you do skirt West Memphis to get there, not so safe, but the campground seemes safe and owners take security seriously. Easy ride over the bridge as mentioned.
Great restaurants in Memphis! A place called Bar Dogs specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches Excellent! Boscos another great place microbrewery and personal sized pizzas Very good. A great place for lunch is the Trolley Stop all local farmers produce and meats. A fancy restaurant in the center of Memphis is called Flight also excellent.
Take a stroll along the River Walk its on top the dyke/hill goes right along the river, at south end is a walking bridge goes into South Bluff, really nice neighborhood with beautiful landscaping and large fountains. At the north end you'll come to the pyramid which wasn't a bass pro shop when we were there it was in planning stage. As far as Beale Street, sometimes fun sometimes not depends on the crowd.
We also stayed at the agricenter, interesting place, they grow a bunch of different test crops there. There are miles of paved bike/jogging trails and I always felt safe there as well.
Enjoy Memphis it's a unique city just, as mentioned above, use common sense.

Dittos on Tom Sawyer in West Memphis, AR great campground on the flood plain of the Mississippi. A place we liked in Memphis was the Bar-B-Que shop at 1782 Madison Ave, Memphis, TN. We saw it a week before we went there on a travel channel show where it was in the top 10 Barbecue places in the US and we had to stop. Small operation but nice people and very helpful with figuring out what to try. We ended up with a sampler of almost everything they had on the menu. Well worth the stop.
