Horse thief campground

Any one been to Horse thief campground in South Dakota? Likes/dislikes/recommendations?

As I recall from about 10 years ago - a smaller CG located near Mt Rushmore, on a fishing lake and just alongside the highway, not too much large rig access. Has a nice boardwalk along the lake. I don't recall hook-ups. Recommend a good look-up including google maps and google view.

There's a very nice KOA down the road just a bit - and other commercial CGs nearby. Custer State Park is a bit further - reservations are a must in summer.

Horse Thief Campground and Horse Thief Lake are both in the same general area but totally separate from each other. The lake is a National Forest Service lake on the road to Mount Rushmore from Hill City SD (SR 244). The campground is a privately owned RV park on SR 87/Needles Hwy a couple of miles off US16/385. We live in the area and have driven by the campground several times but never stayed there. One thing I cannot stress enough ...only enter this park from Hwy 16/385! SR 87/Needles Hwy where the campground is located turns into a very scenic drive with switchbacks and low, narrow tunnels that almost all rigs will not fit through. Do not miss the turn into their driveway! The first tunnel is just a few miles and there is absolutely no where to turn around.

We live in the Black Hills and are very familiar with the area and most of the RV parks, restaurants, attractions etc. Feel free to ask, would be happy to help.

We camped at Heritage Village Campground just outside of Custer about 3 years ago; got snowed on in mid-May! Rumored to have a good view of the Crazy Horse monument, but weather wasn't cooperative for us to see it. Friendly staff, internet if you're close to the office, nice bathrooms and laundry area.

My short trip to the Black Hills was actually a prelude to the 2017 total solar eclipse which I viewed from Alliance NE. I stayed in Spearfish City Campground and rented a car (was in my View at the time, and no toad). Rental car was most of the reason I stayed in Spearfish, as Enterpri$e was within walking distance from the campground. I enjoyed the stay and the Black Hills is small and easily transversed in an hour or so.

The campground at Spearfish is very nice and makes a good base camp for at least the northern portion of a Black Hills visit (and Devils Tower, about an hour away)

I do intend to return and spend more time. I posted my trip report on iRV2 which is a sister web site to this one.
