Has anyone taken the ferry from Anacortes, WA to Sidney, BC?

We are planning on making the crossing from Anacortes, WA to Sidney, BC next week. There will be two couples, each with a motorhome and tow car. I am wondering if there are any tricks to getting lower fares when we get there. If anyone has done this before, I would certainly appreciate your feedback.

We took the Maritime Highway from Haines, AK to Prince Rupert in 2012, and we learned something about taking the measurements to calculate your fee. We were told when we first called to measure the total length of the RV and car, with the car attached.

When we arrived at the terminal we told the gentleman we'd be driving the RV and car onto the ferry separately, and he pointed out that we should then measure each vehicle separately as well. Leaving out the 4' of tow bar equipment saved us something like $200! He said the first agent we talked to should have pointed this out to us, but she didn't.

Be sure to remove and store any bikes or other things you have on the back of your RV or car to shorten their length, because they will likely verify your measurements. Of course, all of this only applies if they are charging by the foot and not per vehicle.

Enjoy your trip!

It's a really nice trip through the San Juan Islands - very scenic - but it isn't cheap for an RV. I'd recommend checking the price on the BC ferry from Tsawassen as an alternative. The drive across the border is no big deal, and it used to be a lot cheaper.

Check what the rates are at tsawwassen to swartz bay crossing up into canada at peace arch crossing is only 45 mins. to the ferry dock and your money will go a long way up here. Currently your dollar is worth 1.30 canadian.probably a better value than paying in u.s. dollars in Anacortes And from Burlington to the border is about 1 hour on the I-5

In the 80's we crossed the Tsawwassen - Nanaimo ferry. At that time fares were half from midnight to 5 am. Half off fares are no more.

Tsawwassen to Nanaimo, or Victoria are the same price. All prices are Canadian currency.

Each passenger: 16.90
Vehicle 20 feet or less: 55.40
Each foot over 20 feet: 6.35

If your MH is more than 20 feet long your car and tow bar cannot be more than 9 feet long to avoid paying more money. Most people unhook their car to cross.

Safe travels. JD

I did a little research.

Disclaimer: Check ferry web sites for accurate pricing information. I may have missed something.

Checking the Tsawwassen crossing prices versus the Anacortes prices it appears that the Tsawwassen crossing is about $60 less. Taking exchange rates into account the Tsawwassen crossing is about $90 US dollars less.

All prices assume separating the car from the MH and cars are less than 22 feet and greater than 14 feet.

Safe travels. JD

We just returned from Victoria, BC. We took the Anacortes Ferry to Sidney. We stayed at a small Mini Storage/ RV park about a mile from the ferry boarding lot. Boarded early, about 8:00 next morning. Total cost: about $180.00 for a 36' motorhome with a Jeep Wrangler towcar.
The trip back was from Victoria to Port Angeles, WA. Total cost: about $300.00. (Due in part to the fact that the Canadian dollar is worth about 1/3 more than the American dollar nowadays)
I have to warn people though, that both our motorhomes were stopped and searched upon landing in Canada. They took our ranch-fresh eggs and apples. That's all they could find.

I think you have that backwards. As of today $1.00 Canadian dollar is worth about .76¢ US. Or $1.00 US is worth about $1.32 Canadian.
