Considering traveling east to west over Cloudcroft, NM on Hwy 82! Can anyone offer any experience with the route?

Doable in a Class A but a nice, narrow, twisty road. Steep grades in spots but the speed limit through the area is only 45 mph or less. Due to the elevation, weather can be variable. Make sure your exhaust brake is working for the descent into Alamogordo.

Other than those things, enjoy your trip.

Small mountain town and it can slip up on us if we have not been used to the "normal" for this sort of place. Things can run somewhat different and closing time may come pretty early but it all depends on what you've been up to before??? I thought it nice but my son in law was a bit buggy after a few days. Summertime in the mountains often comes with sudden popup lightning that can chase a guy off the trails.
I do not find the roads much different than many places where we go up and over. Just got to slow down and take a little more time.
Been to White Sands? If not it might be worth some time. Some interesting railroad history but it is pretty chopped up. Couple of interesting trestles left.

NM Route 82

From east to west, the road from Artesia up to Cloudcroft winds through the mountains and is doable in your coach. Make sure you stop at the roadside stand for all kinds of jams, jellies, salsa, etc. Frendly folks who'll give you their life story! From Cloudcroft going down the hll to Alamogordo / Tularosa the road is very steep and winding. A lower gear is called for. Be aware also that there's a tunnel on this road. I recall there's plenty of headroom, though. The views of these Sacramento Mountains and White Sands are magnificent and worth a slow descent! Have fun and enjoy our Land of Enchantment!

Nice road. Cloudcroft offers a state park with nice sites in the trees for RVs. Don't remember the name of the park. Alamagordo also offers a place in town where you can wash your RV.
